VRebirth in the Pureland

01. Invitation

In the absence of physical body, the deceased’s consciousness is erratic and easily be dragged into any place in connection with his past karma, hence the temporary spirit tablet is in need, to serve as a haven for the consciousness. At the beginning of the puja, the Host Lama will call the name of the deceased, inviting his presence at the puja by landing on the spirit tablet. At this point, relatives and friends should concentrate and visualize the deceased resting on the lotus seat with the seed syllable on his memorial card, with a bright luminous light radiating from the seed syllable.

02. Explanation

1. Explaining the situation: Host Lama elaborates to the deceased of his death and that the living family has accepted the fact of his death, hoping to relieve the deceased from any concerns and worries about his family and relatives or any attachments to the material world.
2.Comfort the Deceased: To calming the deceased by letting him to understand that the family is not able to see or hear him, hence the family’s non-reply is not intentional.
3.The phenomena will be experienced by the deceased in the Bardo State: Host Lama explains to the deceased that all phenomena he experiences are the mere reflection of his own thoughts and are unreal. In lack of a physical body stirs up the sense of fear and the intense emotion distorts his perception of reality.

03. Guiding

In bardo of dharmata, the paths to higher realm and lower realm will be manifested at the same time. Host Lama will advise the deceased to follow closely to the luminous light, which leads to the path of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. He must not choose the soft light over the brilliant light, or he will fall back into the samsara.

04. Purification

After praying by Host Lama and family, the Five Buddhas will manifest and purify the body, mind and speech of the deceased. At this point, visualize the Five Buddhas manifested in the space; the deceased and his family should face to the west and pray sincerely to Amitabha, wishing the deceased to be reborn in the Dewachen (Amitabha’s Pure Land). Then, visualize the Five Buddhas pouring nectar to purify and cleanse the body, mind and speech of the deceased. Dark smoke will come out from the body as the nectar drains and disappears in the space.

05. Rebirth in the Pureland

In this stage, Host Lama together with friends and relatives should encourage the deceased following the luminous light of Avalokitesvara to Pure Land. When arrived at a calm lake where Amitabha sits peacefully on the other side of the lake welcoming him. A pure white light symbolizes the consciousness of the deceased leaving the seed syllable of his spirit tablet and rising to the space. At this point, Host Lama will burn the seed syllable with the five wisdom colored flame, and then white light dissolved into the heart of Amitabha and be united with Amitabha. Then, lotus blooming from the lake and the deceased is reborn on the lotus.

Ask a Question

Where possible we share the answers so that everyone may benefit from them; we believe you will find this section to be a rich resource.

  • Q: Anyone can perform Jangchog?

The bardo is able to read the mind of others. If a puja performed by a practitioner with impure samaya vow or in distraction, it could pose negative influence on the deceased’s mind, ending him in a lower rebirth. Therefore, Jangchog has to be conducted by a qualified Guru or Lama who can guide the deceased through the power of deep meditation to reach the Pure Land or reborn to human realm. Hence not everyone can perform Jangchog.
  • Q: Why Jangchog can help the deceased?

There are benefits even though the mind changes rapidly in the bardo state. With no physical restriction, it is much easier to attain liberation and reach Amitabha Pure Land. It is because the bardo is nature of consciousness in union of luminosity and emptiness. It is in neither physical nor material form and its passage can easily be steered by external forces. In the bardo states, the consciousness will experience life and death every seven days, for a total of seven times or 49 days

    * During this period, karma may lead to reincarnation or liberation.
  • Q: What brings great impact on the deceased in bardo stages?

At the end of inner and outer dissolution (Chikhai bardo), the mind (consciouness) of the deceased will be in an unconscious state for three to four days. When awake, the mind will enter a state of Chönyi bardo and remains in the state for 49 days. During this period of time, and before the next rebirth, the biggest impact comes from the deceased’s own thoughts, his past habits and good or bad karma. Also, the conversation and thoughts of relatives accompanying him also have an impact. Without a physical shackle after death, the deceased’s thoughts changes swiftly. At this moment, the karma accumulated has powerful impact on him and any evil thought or wrong view could result in rebirth in a lower realm. For instance, if someone can be irritated easily by some sounds or things, these same cues will inflame him. If he has strong clinging to the material world, the clinging will deepen. Any of the intense emotions can lead to a rebirth in the lower realm. It is not uncommon for an individual who knows that he is dead but refuses to set off to the bardo journey. He does not want to leave the family he loves or to forgive the persons or things he hates. His attachment to the material world, and he is likely stucked in the bardo stages for many years, and ends in hungry ghost realm.

Therefore, family members should avoid any desperate feeling or destructive behavior that influences the deceased negatively and leads to his future rebirth in the lower realm. On the contrary, it can benefit the deceased by dedicating good deeds such as reciting sutras, chanting mantras, making donations, offering Jangchog to the deceased, freeing him from sufferings and attachments for the opportunity to learn Dharma.
  • Q: The deceased passed away many years ago, is it still necessary to do the redemption every year? Or there is no need to do it in a certain time limit?

For those who have already passed away for a long time or have been reincarnated, the puja reinforces the blessings of the Triple Gem and Bodhisattvas, enabling them to receive the merits dedicated by this family.
  • Q: What is Jangchog?

Performing Jangchog, can help the deceased attain self-liberation, relieving the family to accept the fact.
